How Acupuncture Can Provide Relief for Back Pain

A high percentage of the population struggle with back pain, so high that it is one of the leading reasons why people seek alternative therapies such as acupuncture.

Acupuncture has a long history of effectively treating a variety of issues, including pain, digestive disorders and musculoskeletal conditions. At Fiona Passey Osteopaths, we can provide western and eastern acupuncture therapy.

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a method of alternative therapy that is based on well research medical evidence and is commonly practised by doctors, osteopaths, physiotherapists and other conventional healthcare practitioners.

When you’re ill or in pain, acupuncture looks at your body as being imbalanced, and the aim of the treatment is to help your body return to a more balanced state. The techniques for setting a diagnosis are very subtle and look at the patient as an individual rather than focusing entirely on their pain and illness.

How it works

Eastern acupuncture involves examining the patient’s body as a whole and considering pain and illness as signs of your body being out of order. The treatment involves inserting ultrafine, sterile, disposable needles into your myofascial trigger points, also known as “acupoints”, to help bring your body back to a state of balance. The insertion of needles results in the release of chemicals that promote healing and help to bring the body back to its normal function, helping to relieve pain and illness.

At the start of the session, an acupuncturist will begin by asking you a few questions about your medical history. They may then proceed to a few physical examinations, such as looking at your tongue and ears to form a diagnosis before lying you down to carry out the acupuncture treatment.
