It’s very well-known advice that we should keep our work and personal life separate. However, with the stresses of the day constantly on our minds, it can be difficult to do so. Often, people who are experiencing trouble or a lack of confidence in the workplace, may continue to feel stressed or negatively about themselves in the home. The same goes for the other way around, which can in both cases, lead to a lack of communication with others and strained relationships.
Maintaining good relationships with colleagues, family or friends is essential for a healthy mind and body. If you feel as though you’re unsatisfied with your daily relationships, you’re surrounded by negative relationships or you’re unsure how to move a relationship forward, there are a number of ways it can affect your health:
- The pressures of being in a demanding job or living with bad relationships can put great stress on your immune system
- Studies have found that those living with strained relationships are more likely to develop heart problems
- Supressing anger, resentment or negativity has been associated with decreased longevity
However, it’s not just the physical body that can be affected; many people also develop a lack of self-confidence, holding back in their career or feeling a constant frustration at home.
Improving your relationships with effective communication
If you feel as though your relationships in the home and workplace are unfulfilled or not helping you develop as an individual, learning to effectively communicate is a key way of taking control and better understanding yourself and others.
Simply feeling heard by others can help you build trust in your relationships, giving you the chance to work better in a team and gain confidence in your abilities. Being able to communicate both positive and negative messages, will help you gain respect and control, which will help you progress in your career.
Here are some of the ways you can develop your communicative skills, your self-esteem and confidence:
Surround yourself with positivity
If you’re constantly surrounded by people thinking and acting negatively, say, colleagues who feel as though they’ll never progress, you’ll be more likely to adopt these feelings yourself. Equally, living in a bad relationship can put a strain on your self-development and happiness. Feeling confident does come from within, but you need to ensure that you’re in a good, healthy environment to exert a positive outlook and help you better reach your goals.
Always strive to learn
Reading self-help and improvement books or articles may give you a perspective from others who have experienced similar problems. You’ll also be able to learn new ideas about improving your relationships which you can put into practice, taking a proactive approach to strengthening your self-esteem and mental health. Learning new skills or taking on a new hobby, may also help to manage and reduce your stress, and give you something positive to focus on. Learning something new can inspire confidence, which in turn can reflect positively on career and personal progression.
There’s no shame for asking for help. Speaking to a life-coach or counsellor, experienced in dealing with the issues that may occur for you at work or home, may help you repair damaged relationships or enhance your connections with others. Opening up about your situation and feelings can help you to dispel negativity or misunderstandings with people and help you understand how you can overcome your problems.
Feeling more secure in yourself and in your relationships can ultimately help you feel more satisfied and put you in the right frame of mind to achieve your career and personal aims.
