Soothing Tendinitis with Osteopathy

Tendons are the fibrous connective tissues in our body that connect our muscles to our bones. They are primarily responsible for moving bone, while keeping everything stable. However, if they are overused, there is a risk of developing tendonitis.

Tendonitis is caused by small, repetitive movements that can cause inflammation to an unhealed tendon. Despite the irreversible damage to your tissue, there are ways to reduce your symptoms and prevent it from worsening.

Symptoms of Tendinitis

The tendons most effected by tendonitis are in your shoulder, knee, wrist, shin and heel. It can be caused by manual activities, such as sedentary office work, sports, home cleaning, DIY or medical conditions.

There are a few symptoms associated with tendonitis including:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Muscle weakness
  • Warmth in joint area
  • Affected joint being stiff with limited mobility

If you do not follow up on these symptoms, leaving the tendonitis untreated can become chronic. As a result, you may experience more intense pain and have difficulty sleeping. Your pain could also potentially spread away from your affected joint.

As always, if you spot signs of infection, contact your doctor immediately.

How Osteopathy Can Help

Osteopathy aims to detect, treat and prevent health issues through stretching and massaging muscles and joints. It is grounded on the understanding that wellbeing is best when your bones, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues are properly functioning. Through muscle manipulation, osteopathy encourages easier joint mobility, muscle tension, tissue blood supply and assisting the healing process.

Osteopathy can help soothe tendinitis by identifying the cause of your pain and follow with soft tissue massaging and stretching. This will aim to reduce tension in your muscles and increase the blood flow to your affected joint. Other treatments which may also be considered are trigger point therapy, joint mobilisation, dry needling and myofascial release.

Osteopaths will also look to draft a management plan to assist with healing time, pain relief and make daily activities easier in the meantime.
